If you’re overweight, you’re 99% likely to also be under muscled!
SO WE SHOULD REALLY BE CONCENTRATING ON BUILDING MUSCLE RATHER THAN JUST LOSING FAT.
WHY?
Muscle is the organ of longevity.
As you have heard me discuss in many posts. The obesity and overweight epidemic pose a major risk for serious diet-related chronic diseases, including:
🛑 Type II diabetes
🛑 Cardiovascular disease
🛑 Hypertension
🛑 Stroke
🛑 Certain forms of cancer.
And on the flip side, higher muscle mass actually means: Increased metabolic rate and you are not as likely to fall or contract an illness.
Muscle mass actually protects against the development of deadly diseases and may extend lifespan. The more muscle you have the better your body’s ability to survive just about ANYTHING! Diseases, falls, and even protection against developing diabetes.
Don’t worry, I will never state a problem without solutions.
First, I am not talking about training like Arnold Schwartzenagger (though he is in LA at Gold’s gym and pretty impressive for 76, but that’s a post for another day).
You will however have to train with weights to build muscle mass, no matter your age. We gradually amp up your workout volume—weight, reps, and sets—as your strength and endurance improve.
Second, you will likely have to increase your PROTEIN - the defining nutrient for a high quality diet and the macronutrient that is most effective in building muscle.
Most experts agree we need about 1 gram of protein for every pound of body weight (which is lower than the RDA and a different post).
Best ways to get protein in your diet:
✅ Eggs
✅ Almonds
✅ Chicken
✅ Cottage cheese / greek yogurt (if you’re ok with dairy)
✅ Lentils
✅ Lean beef
✅ Fish
✅ Quinoa
✅ Pumpkin seeds
✅ Turkey breast
✅ Shellfish
✅ Nut butters
If this all sounds overwhelming to you, I have great news- you don’t have to do it alone.
