I Want to Get Healthy, I Just Don’t Have Time
I AM BURNED OUT
STRESSED OUT
Is this you?
There is so much stress in people’s lives collectively in the last few weeks. The pandemic fades, and now a looming recession. It seems the world is constantly on edge.
And it takes a toll at a personal level. Burnout is an epidemic. Over 25% of the population feels burned out often or always (and those are just the people who are being honest). And that can trigger unhealthy coping mechanisms.
🛑 We are overeating - 3600 calories a day, which is almost double what we need to maintain our weight; A habit that raises the risk for obesity, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and other preventable health problems;
🛑 We are sitting too much - on average, 11 hours a day (our early ancestors spent all day hunting and gathering, by comparison, and rarely took a load off);
🛑 Watching too much TV - most recent numbers put Americans at just over 3 hours a day of tube time, more than they spend socializing or exercising, which puts them at increased risk of heart disease and diabetes;
🛑 Scrolling to pass time - we spend around 4 hours a day on the slot machines in our pockets (and no, most of it is NOT work).
There’s so much more that’s making us collectively unhealthy. But I have an idea: Let’s concentrate on the things we can control (it’s a small list) and let go of those we can’t.
These are my three favorite factors to work with:
✅ How we fuel and nourish our bodies with fresh food
✅ Movement/ exercise as stress relief
✅ Making the mind a more peaceful place with meditation
I am still not suggesting that we should look a certain way to be happy, I am advocating we stick with the controllables.
A few things we can’t control:
🛑 The economy
🛑 Whether and when a new COVID variant will emerge
🛑 Other peoples’ inane twitter posts
🛑 Just about anything else outside of our own bodies
So let’s get healthy NOW. You in?
